Diary Of A Lagos Newbie

After serving my nation i travelled back to my hometown to stay with my parents.

I got tired of sending out numerous job applications with little or no feedbacks .

I was told that moving to Lagos will facilitate my chances of getting a job as there were many opportunities.

Having thought it through with my family it was decided that i move .

Lagos, Nigeria

Plans of where to stay were made as i kept day dreaming of how my status was changing.

I was finally going to be a “Lagos Big Girl”.

Two days before my departure , mum and i proceeded to get a bigger box .

As a “Lagos Big Girl”, I already envisaged a grand entry with the flashiest luggage 👜. Well…..

Packing has never been found anywhere close to being my hobby. I could pay someone else to get my packing done for me.

Lucky enough I had my brother around who could help though he had ulterior motives 🙄🙄..

All the excitement of finally leaving my hometown died down as the homesick feeling took over me.

“Well a girl has to hustle”; I said to myself.

With bags packed in the car’s trunk, prayers made by parents, the early hours of Wednesday morning, had me going to the motor park.

On arriving at the park , with mixed feelings I wanted to run back home with my parents and continue the “Daddy and Mummy’s girl life”.

Like I always told myself; life had to go on .

As my parents waved good bye, I fought so hard but to no avail to restrain tears from trickling down my face😭😭😭..

It was my second visit to Lagos but this time as an adult in search of greener pastures.

I had the phone number of my Uncle who I was going to stay with.

As usual, i plugged in my earphones as I was not cut out for any interaction with my seat mates .

There were different categories of passengers; those that snored as loud as 🙄🙄…, those that won’t stop making loud phone calls , those with children that never stopped crying , those that ate throughout the journey , those that slept with their head falling so many times…. And yours truly that minded her business with her music☺️☺️.

I did doze off at some point and was awoken by the usual checkup calls from my parents .

At this point,i wanted to cry again but no way, i had to be a strong girl💪🏾.

The usual demands of fellow passengers asking the driver to stop for them to answer nature’s call was tiring. I just wanted the journey to be over.

As I will always eat no matter my destination,i enjoyed my meal of Jollof Rice with fried meat which I washed down with a bottle of water.

Back to my earphones to enjoy my music( especially raps) and the calls never stopped (trust Nigerian parents).

On reaching Berger the entrance of Lagos, we were welcomed by the traffic jam.

I was told to alight at the motor park called “Jibowu” as I will be picked up to go to my final destination .

Well, well, well felt i had good knowledge of the road and refused to ask my co-passengers to let me know when we got to jibowu. It was at this point that I messed up .

Well “Lagos big girl “ became a novice when she informed the driver that she will be stopping at Jibowu park and the driver shouted that he had passed there a long time ago.

Sweats ran down my face and i imagined how it will be all over blogs and pages that a certain young lady got lost in Lagos .

Having made calls to inform friends and family that my journey had developed a hitch,i got suggestions on the nearest park to get to.

A friend suggested i should use “Uber “ to find my way and it dawned on me that I never had the app on my phone .

Finally, i picked up a cab and felt so sad when the cab driver mentioned the high amount I was to pay.

I began bargaining with him thinking I was in my hometown . Lagos Big Girl title finally fell my hand🤦🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️.

To my amazement, we arrived at my destination within fifteen minutes , i stared shockingly at the cab driver and requested for a refund. Well that did not work as i had to part way with the money.

I realized the importance of Google map as it helped monitor my movement.

I learnt my lesson not to be moved by assumptions.

How have we been doing 🙂.

Stay Safe…

  1. You gats fall hand in any city before you start developing sense.
And Lagos being as it is, I won’t fault anyone especially on their first journey in.

At least lesson learnt, you must be a JJC before you can climb the ranks to the big girls part.

But that their yellow taxi and old drivers know how to get the dough from jjc’s.
    Lolzzzzz
